How to read a lake depth map
A depth map is not a picture of the lake bottom. It is a set of inferences drawn from a finite number of soundings taken on one particular day, often decades ago. Reading one well means knowing which lines are measurements, which are interpolation, and where the map is quietly guessing.
Contour lines connect equal depths, not equal distances
Every line on a bathymetric chart joins points of the same depth. The number printed on or beside a line is that depth, in feet below the surveyed water level. What matters for fishing is not any single line but the spacing between them:
- Lines packed tightly together mean the bottom drops fast — a break, a ledge, the edge of an old river channel. Fish relate to these because a short swim changes temperature, light, and cover.
- Lines spread far apart mean a flat. Large featureless flats hold fish only when something else is going on — weeds, wood, wind, or bait.
- A closed ring in open water is a hump or bar if the depths inside it are shallower than the ring, and a hole if they are deeper. The printed numbers are the only way to tell those apart; a ring alone is ambiguous.
- A contour that bends toward shore traces an inside turn; one that bulges out into the basin is a point. Both concentrate fish moving along the break.
The contour interval decides what the map can show you
Most older lake surveys are drawn on a fixed ladder — commonly 5 or 10 feet. A 10-foot interval map cannot show you a 3-foot hump on an 18-foot flat, because that hump never crosses a contour value. It is invisible, not absent. On a lake mapped at a coarse interval, the flats between lines deserve more suspicion than the breaks: the structure that is not drawn is exactly the structure nobody else is fishing.
Check the interval before you plan around a map. Two lakes with identical-looking charts can differ by a factor of two in how much detail was ever recorded.
Spot soundings are the real measurements
The scattered loose numbers in open water are spot soundings — individual depth readings taken as the survey boat crossed. They are the primary data. The contour lines were drawn between them by hand, which means:
- A contour running close to several soundings is well constrained.
- A contour crossing a wide blank area is an interpolation between distant points, and the bottom in between may do something the cartographer never saw.
- The deepest number on the map is the deepest spot the boat happened to pass over. It is a lower bound on maximum depth, not a measurement of it.
Read the water level, not just the depths
Depths are relative to the water level on survey day. On reservoirs and controlled flowages, that level may sit several feet from where it is today, and every contour shifts with it. On natural seepage lakes, multi-year drought can do the same. A 6-foot contour is only a 6-foot contour at the datum the survey used.
Survey age is the single most useful thing on the sheet
Basins are more stable than everything drawn on top of them. A 1950s survey usually still has the main basin shape roughly right, while its weed lines, bars, and shoreline detail may be long gone — sedimentation fills bays, dredging cuts channels, and shorelines get armored. Trust the deep contours of an old map far more than its shallow ones.
What a depth map is not
It is not a navigation chart. Survey-derived lake maps do not carry the accuracy guarantees, hazard marking, or update cycle that safe navigation requires, and an uncharted rock is still a rock.
