Methodology

How this list is built

  • Ranked by surface area at conservation pool, taken from Texas Water Development Board hydrographic-survey reports. Each figure is read from the published survey rather than computed by us.
  • TWDB figures can differ from familiar numbers because they are newer measurements: Lake Ray Hubbard's often-quoted 22,745 acres is a design-era estimate, and the 2015 resurvey measured 20,947.
  • Conservation pool is the level a reservoir is operated to hold, so flood-pool areas are never used — they would let flood-control lakes leapfrog genuinely larger water supply lakes. Wright Patman's pool varies by season; its June-October recreation level is used.
  • Shared border waters are excluded — Toledo Bend and Caddo (Louisiana), Falcon and Amistad (Mexico), and Texoma (Oklahoma) — because their full surface is not within Texas.
  • A reservoir with no TWDB survey figure is left off rather than estimated. Satellite-derived outlines read 8-25% low for Texas reservoirs, so they are not used here.
  • Public access inventories are not yet tracked for Texas here, so access is never shown or ranked.

Source data: Texas Water Development Board hydrographic-survey reports, read at each reservoir's conservation-pool elevation. Reservoirs without a published TWDB survey figure are not listed.Lake outlines are shoreline shapes from LakeList and the USGS National Hydrography Dataset; they illustrate a lake's form and are not depth or navigation charts.
