Water quality quick take

From Wisconsin DNR / Citizen Lake Monitoring readings at Sheas Lake - Deepest Area.

Last sampled Aug 2023

Through 2023, somewhat hazy water — summer clarity of 5.4 ft is lower than most monitored Wisconsin lakes.

Summer averages (July/August)

July/August means; counts in parentheses show how many samples went into each average.

YearSecchiChlorophyll-aTotal phosphorus
20235.4 ft (8)——
20183.0 ft (2)34.5 µg/L (2)51.0 µg/L (1)
20175.5 ft (1)17.0 µg/L (2)—
19945.5 ft (2)13.0 µg/L (2)34.0 µg/L (2)
19766.6 ft (1)——

Latest individual samples: Secchi 4.8 ft (2023-08-30), chlorophyll-a 25 µg/L (2018-09-07), and total phosphorus 51 µg/L (2018-08-10).

Secchi clarity is how deep a black-and-white disk stays visible from the surface — more feet means clearer water.

Chlorophyll-a is an algae pigment; higher values signal more algae in the water column.

Total phosphorus is a nutrient that feeds algae and aquatic plants. It is not a weed survey — depth, bottom type, water movement, and management change the actual lake experience.

Management contextLake-specific whole-shoreline nighttime electrofishing after a spring 2025 fish kill; captured and observed-only fish remain separately labeled.

Black crappie dominated the 274-fish captured sample. Bluegill and yellow perch were much less abundant, while only four pumpkinseeds and one northern pike were netted.

  • The report was completed March 30, 2026 but covers the May 2025 survey.
  • The survey followed a spring 2025 fish kill, which may affect comparison with prior years.
  • Two approximately 28-inch northern pike and one approximately 15-inch largemouth bass were observed but not netted; approximate lengths are excluded.
  • Bullheads and golden shiners were described only as numerous, so no numeric values are invented.
