Water quality quick take

From Wisconsin DNR / Citizen Lake Monitoring readings at Round Lake - Hinton Bay (RND-1).

Sampled Jul 2026Volunteer monitoring since 1995

Very clear, low-algae water — summer clarity of 22.6 ft puts it among the clearest tenth of monitored Wisconsin lakes.

Secchi clarity is how deep a black-and-white disk stays visible from the surface — more feet means clearer water.

Chlorophyll-a is an algae pigment; higher values signal more algae in the water column.

Total phosphorus is a nutrient that feeds algae and aquatic plants. It is not a weed survey — depth, bottom type, water movement, and management change the actual lake experience.

Management contextThe survey included both Round Lake and Little Round Lake. Wisconsin DNR states that most effort occurred in Round Lake and the results are most representative of Round Lake; the metrics are not relabeled as strictly Round-Lake-only observations.

Wisconsin DNR's 2025 late-spring survey found a low-density, large-bodied muskellunge fishery; high-quality black crappie and northern pike size structure; high smallmouth bass abundance; lower largemouth bass abundance; and modest bluegill size. Walleye were captured but excluded from the report's results because the late timing and sampled habitats did not provide a representative walleye sample.

  • Manage Round Lake muskellunge for maximum size at relatively low density; the report notes a 50-inch minimum length and one-fish daily bag limit.
  • The restrictive five-fish daily black crappie limit is intended to maintain the lake's high-quality crappie population.
  • Do not use the 2025 walleye catch as a population index because DNR says survey timing and habitat made it unrepresentative.

Depth FAQ

How deep is Round Lake?

Round Lake is 74 feet deep at its deepest point and averages about 33 feet, according to Wisconsin DNR records.

Is there a free depth map of Round Lake?

Yes. LakeList publishes a free interactive depth contour map of Round Lake at a typical 5-foot interval, with an optional 3D underwater view, derived from C-MAP Genesis community sonar (derived) survey data.

Where does the Round Lake depth map come from?

The interactive depth contours are derived from C-MAP Genesis community sonar (derived). Each contour set passes a visual QA review against the source document before it is published. The depths are derived from community sonar recordings (C-MAP Genesis Social Map, used with permission), with gaps between recordings interpolated; not for navigation.
